Mifare Hack Leaves ANDiS Unaffected

19 June 2008 (Rotterdam, The Netherlands) - Following the recent publicity surrounding the hack to the Crypto-1 cipher of the Mifare Classic and Plus cards, Bell ID would like to reassure their customers that the ANDiS Card and Application Management Systems (CAMS) and it's associated solutions are unaffected by this hack.

While ANDiS interacts with the chip on the smart card, it is the integral security of the chip that has been attacked not the security of the connecting systems.

Erik Vermeer, Technical Director at Bell ID commented "While this kind of attack is a worry, a well thought-out secure environment never relies on only one layer of security. The additional layers of security implanted on a Systems level will remain intact. The hack to the Mifare Classic and Plus chips only affects one layer of security. In addition, the Mifare Plus chips remain secure when the 128bit AES is used. "

Mifare Classic chips are used in smart cards worldwide. The newly released Mifare Plus chip can be seamlessly introduced into Mifare Classic systems offering customers a straightforward solution. Alternatively DES Fire chips can also be used for some implementations. Bell ID's ANDiS CAMS can support the Mifare Plus chip as well as DES Fire chips, offering customers greater flexibility.
