For the first time in The Netherlands, football supporters’ club cards are being replaced by mobile phones. A trial has been launched at Roda JC football club and will run for the duration of the 2005/2006 season. 50 supporters are using their phones not only for entering the Parkstad Limburg Stadium but also for purchasing food and goods at the stalls and club shop. Roda JC, in partnership with KPN, Philips, Bell ID, SmartPoint and KNVB ClubSupport are investigating the extent to which NFC technology can be used for “mobile ticketing” in place of traditional methods for distributing and managing physical tickets and cards. The expectation is that the supporters will find them much easier to use.
