Bell ID developed a biometrics-based smart card solution for the Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND) of the Dutch Ministry of Justice, providing for identification of asylum seekers by means of a digital fingerprint. Asylum seekers are issued with a smart ID card (the so-called “Electronic Week Document”) once they apply for asylum in The Netherlands and they are required to use the card when reporting regularly to one of 18 registration offices across the country. Over 200,000 cards, including fingerprint data and serving as an official ID document, have been issued.
